Reinventing the Town Centre:

A Low-Impact Cultural Quarter

We were asked to explore how a town centre could be reinvented as a vibrant cultural quarter—within planetary boundaries and on a tight budget. Our approach focused on three prime vacant buildings, highlighting the potential of retrofit over demolition.

Our proposals emphasised sustainability and resilience, including:

  • Extensive insulation to reduce energy demand

  • Closed-loop water systems to minimise consumption

  • Self-sufficiency in electricity, using photovoltaics and air-source heat pumps

  • Improved biodiversity, with green roofs, planting and habitat features

  • Circular design principles, retaining existing structures and materials wherever possible

The project demonstrates how careful design and retrofit can breathe new life into empty buildings, creating cultural spaces that are resource-efficient, low-carbon, future-proof and also fun.
