Control Solar Gain

Much thought went into renovating this Victorian terraced house. A small extension made a significant difference, but the main work focused on improving energy efficiency and rebalancing the living spaces.

The house is now fully insulated, mostly internally to preserve the brick façade in this conservation area. A highly efficient boiler has been installed, underfloor heating added, and retractable external blinds provide shading in summer and insulation at night. Rooflights increase natural daylight, and wiring has been installed for future PV panels.

Space has been rebalanced by moving the bathroom upstairs, creating a loft study, and converting upper reception rooms into bedrooms, improving functionality without a large extension.

Eco features include:

  • Full internal insulation of walls and roof

  • Floor slab insulation with underfloor heating

  • Highly efficient boiler

  • External blinds for solar gain control

  • Rooflights to boost daylight

  • Extension built with breathable materials (timber frame, bricks, lime mortar)

  • Careful material selection elsewhere: recycled timber, kitchen worktop
